To Bauhaus or not to Bauhaus
Have we designers lost sight of the higher ideals that were so central to the most influential movement in industrial design ever? The Bauhaus ideals - the highest possible quality available to many - were based on a close connection between cultural awareness, social commitment and financial return.
Of course, every generation has the right to embrace their spirit of time, to design something new.
That being said, it seems today that one is exalting something new as the only desirable quality. It can no longer be equated with real innovation, but rather reformulated into the "illusion of the new". As an empty shell, free of meaning and substance, design has become a goal in itself rather than a process of creating a meaningful result.
We owe our own field of expertise to reflect on our own practice, as well as to assess each component we choose to use. Everytime! Design requires a constant search for ideals, blurring boundaries and a continuous improvement of our response to fundamental questions; “What can design add to a world of abundance of products and services?”.
The workshop is supported by the Norwegian Association of Interior Architects and Furniture Designers (NIL) and is organized by the Møbelgruppen i NIL .
ALDEA is a creative ecosystem that aims to foster the creative ambitions of our open community. Professional grade workshops (metal, wood, digital fabrication), gallery, working studios, residency program and online cultural management systems are all part of our broad set of resources. Innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship across art, design, and technology is at the core of our methodical approach used to push creative boundaries.
