Arne Skaug Olsen & Anders Dahl Monsen

25/02/22 – 27/03/22

A duo exhibition at the Aldea Gallery on Friday the 27th of February from 18:00 - 22:00.

Performance at 21:00

Fermenting Subjects is an orchestra of tailor made wind instruments that harvest carbon dioxide from the fermentation of yeast to produce a soundscape. A network of soft tubes, hard pipes and rubber membranes connects to a repository of yeast, sugar and water under the processes of fermentation. As the yeast cycles through the conversion of sugar into CO2, it flows through the connected pipes, until escaping through small gaps in the rubber membranes vibrating the rubber and in the process producing low baritone sounds amplified through the hard pipes adjacent to it.

Through this semi-autonomous work Arne and Anders endeavor to bring a voice to one of the smallest of living beings we have cohabited with since the dawn of the agricultural period.

“that we have no ears to hear the music the spores shot off from basida make obliges us to busy ourselves microphonically.”

------ John Cage, A year from Monday (1967)'

"our data indicate that different sound frequencies induce different metabolic and physiological responses in yeast cells. This opens new perspectives for scientific investigation interfacing acous-tics, biophysics and biochemistry, and perhaps provides powerful tools for manipulating cell metabolism and growth control  and proliferation"

------- Raphael Bastos Mereschi Aggio, Victor Obolonkin & Silas Granato Villas-Bôas, Sonic vibration affects the metabolism of yeast cells growing in liquid culture: a metabolomic study (2012)'

Fermenting Subjects was first released in 2018 at the Arctic Arts Festival in Harlstad and curated by Hanne Hammer Sien. Its second iteration was exhibited at the Lofoten International Sound Art festival in Henningsvær in 2019, followed by Podium in the same year. This presentation of FS at Aldea will be the fourth installment of the work.
